When he was a college students studying at Emory University from 1952 to 1954, he took part in many productions. When he joined the Air Force, in 1953 he appeared in an airforce production in Biloxi together with Betty Lou Bredemus. In 1955, they got married and, in 1956, their son Eric Anthony was born. Walter along with his wife quit the Air Force in the year 1957 and enrolled Walter in Tulane University. In 1960, the family relocated to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter and Betty Lou produced a Saturday matinee local TV show for kids known as Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964, a project they self-financed. They also founded the six-year Actors and Writers Workshop later in the year. They had two more children: Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also named Lisa) as well as Julia Billingsley (1967) (also know as Julie).
